Warwick police make firearm related arrest

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Warwick police were able to make an arrest after a gun had been fired at 9 a.m. Thursday morning.

Officers arrested William Leavitt, 41, without any problems following a 911 call to 123 Payton Avenue, according to a statement.

An investigation by police found that Leavitt had been wandering around the neighborhood with the weapon before and after it went off approximately four times in his own home.

Leavitt was confronted by an off-duty Newport police officer who attempted to detain him until Warwick police arrived, described the news release.

Police also say that it has been determined that the shots fired in Leavitt’s home was Leavitt firing the pistol into a kitchen cabinet.

No injuries were reported.

Leavitt was transported to Warwick Police Headquarters pending arraignment.
