SWANSEA, Mass. (WPRI) – Swansea police and fire officials were called to the scene of a manhole explosion on Swansea Mall Drive Sunday night.

The manhole struck a vehicle driving by, causing damage to the car, but no injuries were reported.

National Grid was called to the scene after the explosion left much of the area around Swansea Mall Drive without power for more than two hours.

The explosion happened around 4:45 p.m. Sunday and National Grid was still on scene working to restore power at 6:30 p.m.

According to Swansea Police, the cause of the manhole was later determined as one of the National Grid feeder lines which failed, causing the outage to the buildings and local businesses around Swansea Mall Drive.

Police were called to the scene mainly for traffic control while officials worked to restore power.
