FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A second suspect believed involved in the February 2008 killing of two Taunton brothers faced a judge Wednesday morning.

Matthew Lander, 28, of Swansea, was arraigned at Fall River District Court on two counts of murder and one count of armed robbery.

Lander, and Keith Cox, 26, of Berkley, Mass., were indicted over the weekend for the killings nearly nine years ago of Kevin and Shawn Vargas. Cox is charged with two counts each of murder and armed robbery.

The Vargas brothers were found shot and killed at their Somerset Avenue apartment. Kevin’s 2- and 4-year-old sons were also found there, unharmed.

A judge ordered Lander held without bail; he will be housed at the Bristol County House of Correction. He is due back in court November 17 for a pretrial conference, to be followed by a hearing scheduled for April 3.
