Pedestrian struck in Cranston; police searching for driver

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are searching for the driver of a pedestrian hit-and-run that left a young man with serious head injuries.

Police responded to the scene on Marlow Street in Cranston around 6 p.m.

A news release identified the pedestrian as 20-year-old Charles Austen Deery from New Canaan, Connecticut. Deery is currently a student at Brown University.

According to a witness, the car did not stop after hitting Deery but actually sped away.

The witness, a 15-year-old girl told police she witnessed the incident while walking home from her friend’s house. She said the man was shooting video on the side of the road when a small silver car came by driving erratically and struck him.

Police on the scene marked a camera lens and a tripod left on the road as evidence.

The victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital. The witness said that when she ran to his side, he was not responsive.

Police said the suspect’s vehicle would likely have damage from the crash to the right-front passenger side, including the headlight, hood, and windshield.
