PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) issued a warning to Providence residents after a captured raccoon tested positive for rabies.
According to the DEM, a domestic cat was attacked by the raccoon in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood and was euthanized as a result. The raccoon was later captured on Biltmore Avenue.
Area residents are advised to avoid contact with free-roaming wildlife and make sure all pets are properly vaccinated.
The DEM is asking residents to report any raccoon encounters in the area. If you had contact with a raccoon, you’re asked to contact the state Department of Health at (401) 222-2577 during normal business hours or (401) 272-5952 during the weekend or after hours.
If your pet had contact with a raccoon, you should call Providence Animal Control at (401) 243-6040 during normal business hours or the Providence Police Department at (401) 272-3121 after hours.
Any animal bites should be reported to the local animal control officer. If you spot a wild animal that’s noticeably sick or acting aggressively, call the DEM’s Division of Law Enforcement at (401) 222 – 3070.
