Hurricane Matthew could create disastrous storm surges

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — As Hurricane Matthew continues its path up the Florida coast towards Georgia and the Carolinas, its winds are causing potentially devastating storm surges.

The exact path of the powerful storm will have an effect on where the most devastating winds end up, so there’s some uncertainty about the extent of Matthew’s winds. But – there is a lot more certainty with the storm surge because no matter where the strongest end up, they will be close enough to push massive amounts of water towards the Atlantic Coast.

In the above video, Meteorologist Pete Mangione explains how storm surges form and why they can be so devastating.
