PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Providence police officer seen on video punching and dragging a woman when she resisted arrest is being disciplined.
Public Safety Commissioner Steven Paré didn’t say how Officer Michael Place would be punished for the May encounter. Paré said Thursday that Place could have done things differently and was put in a predicament where he had to use force.
Federal prosecutors also reviewed the encounter and determined that action wasn’t appropriate.
The video captures part of a disturbance on May 23. A police report says Place saw the woman smashing things on the porch and turned to hit him. Place said he was struggling with the first woman when a second woman jumped on him.
Both women were charged.
The police union did not immediately respond to a telephone request for comment.
