PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The bench trial of a man accused of killing his newborn daughter began Tuesday with the girl’s mother taking the stand.
Prosecutors also played the 911 call Mayra Gonzalez made in 2012, when she discovered her eight-week-old daughter Christina wasn’t breathing.
Christopher Jimenez is charged with Christina’s murder. Prosecutors said Jimenez beat Christina, causing dozens of horrific injuries. The baby died two weeks after being brought to the hospital.
Gonzalez testified Tuesday that she didn’t know the extent of Christina’s injuries until after she called 911. According to Gonzalez, Jimenez claimed he had accidentally dropped Christina, causing her to hit her head on a table.
Jimenez has pleaded not guilty.
Several more witnesses are scheduled to take the stand. Testimony is expected to wrap up next week.
