PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — New federal regulations could mean more pay for over 4.2 million of Americans that work overtime.
Many people could be eligible for a raise under new overtime exemptions rule that are set to begin December 1.
“The purpose of these new regulations is to make sure that more people are properly paid overtime,” said Matthew Reeber, an attorney at PLDW who specializes in employment issues.
These ‘white collar’ regulations include an increase in the standard salary level from $455 dollars a week to $913 dollars a week.
Reeber explained that anybody who doesn’t make $913 a week but is exempt from overtime, should be getting a raise. Or those employees that haven’t been receiving overtime while on a salary will find themselves as hourly employees, he said.
The US Department of Labor claimed that of the 4.2 million that are affected nationwide, 12,921 of those workers are in Rhode Island and 83,503 are in Massachusetts.
According to Reeber, businesses should take some time between now and December 1 to make sure all employees are classified correctly.
