RIPTA to relocate its Photo Identification office

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI)– The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) will relocate its Photo Identification office from Kennedy Plaza in downtown Providence to its main headquarters at 705 Elmwood Avenue.

RIPTA said the move will allow it to extend the hours of operation to five days a week.

In addition, RIPTA said the new location will have access to free parking, which will benefit social service agencies which regularly transport clients to the office for pass applications, renewals, and replacements.

“The move will allow us to better use our staff resources and we will be able to keep the Photo Identification Office open five days a week while also continuing to visit Senior Centers around the state every Friday to process applications for reduced fare customers,” said Barbara Polichetti, Director of Public Affairs for RIPTA.

She said that RIPTA had previously processed applications at both Kennedy Plaza and its headquarters, but that was a temporary measure meant to ensure that all reduced fare pass holders re-qualify by September 1, 2016.

“That was a big undertaking for our staff and our customers alike,” Polichetti said. “Now that we are through with that process, it is time to consolidate more services here at 705 Elmwood Avenue.“

The headquarters location is accessible by bus Route 20 (Elmwood Avenue/T.F. Green Airport). The office will be open from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

RIPTA will continue to maintain its ticket window at Kennedy Plaza from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m, Monday through Friday. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturdays.
