EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) — Family and friends mourning the death of a girl struck by an Amtrak train in East Greenwich are now planning a funeral service and creating a GoFundMe page.

A family friend was devastated when he heard the news, and then quickly turned his grief into action.

Enrique Contreras is responsible for starting a GoFundMe page to help support the family.

“My mom obviously was hysterical, and my girlfriend. My little sister, when she came home, that’s when I lost it a little bit,” said Contreras about when he got the call about his friend’s death.

As of Tuesday night, his page had raised over $16,000 towards the family.

“I do not know what the money’s going to be used for. I’m going to give it to them and they can use it for whatever they need at this time,” said Contreras.

The family may use the money for the funeral, scheduled to be on October 21.

Contreras described the girl as “outgoing, funny, and awesome to be around all the time.”

Friends of the teen can only guess why she was on the tracks that day. Asia Johnson, a friend of the victim, said, “her and her sister like to be artsy and they like to take pictures places, so maybe they were trying to take pictures to make the background look cool.”
