Police: Woman wounded in drive-by shooting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating a drive-by shooting in Providence that left a woman injured Wednesday night.

Officers responded at about 10:15 p.m. to June Street, in the city’s Chad Brown neighborhood, and arrived to find a 27-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound inside an apartment.

According to police, several shots were fired from a black or dark-colored SUV or station wagon, possibly an Audi, that appeared to have a red-colored dashboard display.

The victim was struck while sitting on a couch inside the apartment. Police said two children under the age of 4 had moved from the area just seconds prior to the shooting.

The woman was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. Her condition is not known at this time.

Police said the vehicle fled the scene, turning left on June Street then right on Berkshire Street towards Admiral Street.

Providence Police Maj. David Lapatin believes the apartment was targeted but said the victim may not have been the intended mark. Investigators are looking into the possibility that other people who occupied or visited the residence were the intended targets.
