PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is hoping the second time is the charm for a lane split on a busy stretch of I-95 in Providence.
Beginning Friday night at 10 p.m., weather-permitting, RIDOT will once again re-route southbound traffic onto the newly built Providence Viaduct bridge near Providence Place Mall.
The two lanes left of the split and to the lane just to the right of the split will be available for through traffic. The far right lane will remain open as an exit-only lane for Atwells Avenue. (See the graphic below)
The first attempt to re-route traffic onto the new bridge Tuesday morning created confusion among drivers, resulting in heavy back-ups and at least eleven accidents. Transportation Director Peter Alviti apologized for the problems, blaming a lack of communication and poor signage.
