WARREN, R.I. (WPRI) – A Warren man was reportedly one of two workers killed when a water main broke and flooded a construction trench in Boston Friday.
According to the Boston Globe, 47 year-old Robert Higgins was killed in the accident, along with 53 year-old Kelvin Mattocks of Brockton.
The two men were part of a crew working in a 15-foot deep trench on Dartmouth Street when the the pipe burst and the trench flooded. Higgins and Mattocks were unable to get out of the trench and their bodies were recovered later by the Boston Fire Department.
A woman who answered the phone at a home in Warren where Higgins was living with family told Eyewitness News that Higgins’ stepfather was not interested in speaking with the media.
According to the Globe, Higgins had recently taken the job with Atlantic Drain Service Co. after going back to school to learn to weld.
Atlantic Drain has a lengthy list of safety violations, according to OSHA records.
