SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Matt Sewall has been the named the Northeast Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after helping the Bryant University football to a 27-17 victory over Wagner College on Saturday afternoon at Beirne Stadium.
Sewall picks up his first-career weekly honor after posting a career-high 180 return yards on four returns. He opened the second half with a 60-yard runback that led to a Bryant field goal. The Seahawks then trimmed the Bulldogs’ lead to 13-10 but Sewall changed things quickly. He fielded the ensuing kickoff at his own 3, broke a shoestring tackle at the 20 and then raced downfield for a 97-yard kick return touchdown.
The 97-yard return is the second longest in program history, three yards shy of Jose Depadua’s record that was set in 2013 against Sacred Heart. Sewall’s 180 return yards are the third most in a single-game in program history.
Bryant returns to the field on Saturday when it travels to Pittsburgh to face Duquesne. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
