COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — Coventry High School was locked down for a short time Wednesday morning but fortunately it turned out to be a false alarm.
According to town police, all available officers responded to the school after the lockdown alarm sounded just after 7 a.m.
Lockdown procedures went into effect and a limited number of students who were inside the building were held in place before being evacuated.
Police said arriving school buses were diverted as officers conducted a sweep of the building. Officials gave the all-clear at about 7:40 and students were allowed back inside the school.
School officials are looking into the cause of the false alarm, according to police. A meeting is scheduled for Wednesday to review the response.
