JAMESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The Coast Guard and Jamestown police department rescued a 60-year-old man early Sunday morning off Fort Wetherhill, after he fell off his sailboat.

According to a report, police alerted the Coast Guard just before 12:30 a.m. to a man in the water who had been clinging to his boat for about two hours.

A police officer initially responded to the scene in his kayak, but could not get the man to safety. During a rescue attempt, the officer fell from his kayak and it was lost under the sailboat.

Using a flare for light, the Coast Guard was able to rescue both the man and officer from the water.

Emergency medical services were waiting on the dock and immediately treated the man for hypothermia.

He was transported to Newport Hospital.

No word yet on his current condition.
