PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A special Saturday afternoon ceremony was held for Providence native Kimani Lawrence to announce where he’ll be playing basketball next fall.

The New Hampton School forward, ranked 54th in ESPN’s Top 100 for the Class of 2016, picked Arizona State for his future home.

Arizona’s Sun Devils edged out Florida State University and USC for Lawrence.

Saturday’s event held even more meaning for Lawrence, and his mother.

“I had to make sacrifices leaving home at a young age,” Lawrence told Eyewitness News Saturday. “It was hard at first, but it worked out in the end. She made a lot of sacrifices for me, working two jobs, doing a lot of overtime, sacrificing her personal life for me and my brother. It’s big for her to see everything she has been through finally paying off for her too.”
