PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man was arrested overnight as police investigated a report of gunshots in the city.
Officers in the Olneyville section of the city reported hearing several shots at about 2:15 a.m. and began canvassing the area, according to police.
About 15 minutes later, police pulled over a white Jeep after witnessing it run a stop sign at the intersection of Heath and Laban Streets.
Police said the driver – identified as Anthony Florian – put his hands out of the car and stated, “I’m sorry officer, I know that I blew that stop sign.”
When questioning the two males inside the Jeep, police said they noticed the passenger – identified as Arnold Angeles – appeared nervous and reached to his waistband several times.
As the officers removed the driver from the vehicle, police said Angeles attempted to run off with a silver firearm in his hand.
He was captured after a brief chase and the firearm was recovered, according to police.
Angeles, 22, of Providence, was charged with carrying a firearm while intoxicated and was transferred to the city’s detective bureau for further charging.
Florian, 23, of Warwick, will be charged with several traffic offenses.
