New lane configuration in place on I-95 South

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Commuters driving southbound through Providence Monday morning may notice a new traffic pattern on I-95.

The change was implemented early Saturday morning as the state Department of Transportation works to gradually transfer all lanes of travel to the newly built bridge.

The far left lane is still on the old bridge, while the second and third from the left have been shifted to the new bridge with a divider in the middle.Providence viaduct I-95 South lane changes

All three continue on I-95, so RIDOT advises drivers to stay in their lanes and take it slow through the construction zone. The far right lane is still for Exit 21 (Atwells Avenue).

Commuters should give themselves a little extra travel time as the change could cause congestion Monday morning.

The final phase, in which all lanes are moved to the new bridge, is expected to be put in place next month.
