Westerly PD speaks out against police chief appointment

WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) — The Westerly Police Department took to Facebook to express disappointment in the appointment of their newest police chief.

Richard Silva was given the position after a three month search for a replacement by the town, according to a release.

Captain Shawn Lacey had been heading the department during the transition period since Chief Edward St. Clair’s retirement in July.

The Facebook post declared support for Lacey and criticized the decision to bring in Silva, who spent 28-years as an officer and eight years as chief in West Warwick.

Lacey has been with Westerly department for 29 years.
