Prosecutors say Lopez broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home on Alverson Avenue in Providence in late July and killed Andres Arguijo Acosta out of jealousy. He was later arrested at a relative’s home in Cranston.

According to police documents, in that time, Lopez had dismantled his phone and cut his hair. Detectives found his shorts were thrown into a bag and his shirt on top of a grill.

A large steak knife that appeared to have blood on it, as well as blood in the apartment was found by police.

Lopez’s attorney said Lopez and his ex-girlfriend were off-and-on, and the allegations are completely out of character.

The woman witnessed the crime, according to police.

Acosta was a father of three who worked in the jewelry business, according to his close friend, Hugo Tamup.

Lopez is due back in court for a pre-trial conference on Jan. 12.
