PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence police say you should be very leery if you receive a call claiming one of your loved ones has been kidnapped.
Police said a scheme has been making the rounds in which schemers obtain personal information from potential victims on social media or by hacking into their cell phones – and then alerting their victims that a family member has been kidnapped and demanding money for their release.
It’s similar to a scheme Eyewitness News first reported last month in which a Somerset couple was targeted. Last year, the FBI also sent out a warning in New York over similar incidents.
Police said if you receive a call like this, hang up and call police right away.
