PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating after a car with human remains inside was found underwater in Portsmouth.

Police said they responded just after 4:30 p.m. to Brewer’s Marina after a caller reported seeing oil on the water’s surface.

A diver entered the water and discovered the vehicle. Rescue swimmers with Rhode Island State Police and the town’s fire department were called in, and police said they found the car was covered in silt and appeared to have been submerged for some time.

The vehicle was guarded overnight by Portsmouth Police and recovered Thursday morning by the State Police Marine unit. Inside, investigators found a decomposed body, according to police.

The body has not yet been identified.

Police said the vehicle matches the description of the one being operated by a 21-year-old South Kingstown man who has been missing since February.

The state medical examiner’s office has taken custody of the remains. Portsmouth and South Kingstown detectives continue to investigate.
