Police: 1 dead, 5 injured in Westport highway crash

WESTPORT, Mass. (WPRI) – A highway wreck in Westport claimed the life of one New Bedford resident and sent five other people to the hospital.

Massachusetts State Police said the crash happened at about 3:15 a.m. Sunday on I-195 Eastbound, just east of Exit 10.

Troopers found a 2006 Honda Civic on its roof in the breakdown lane. The driver, 25 year-old Cassandra Camacho of New Bedford, had been thrown from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said the car appears to have veered off the road on the median side, hit a jersey barrier, and then rolled over. It’s unclear what caused Camacho to lose control.

There were five other people in the car, all of whom were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening: three men, ages 19, 26 and 30, and two women, ages 18 and 23. All five were from New Bedford.

Lanes reopened at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
