CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – Republican Allan Fung has won the election for mayor of Cranston, Eyewitness News projects.

Fung defeated Democrat Michael Sepe.

“I’m proud and humbled that the voters of Cranston have sent me back for another term to serve them with the resounding victory at 70-30 ladies and gentlemen,” Fung said before a crowd of supporters Tuesday night.

Fung, who was first elected mayor in 2008, was widely favored to win despite waging a losing campaign for governor two years ago and facing major criticism over his handling of troubles in the city police department. Fung criticized Sepe, a former city councilman, throughout the campaign as an old-school politician who couldn’t be trusted to manage city finances.
