TAUNTON, Mass. (WPRI) – A man who was critically injured by a hit-and-run driver Thursday night in Taunton has died.

Police said Saturday morning that the victim, 36-year-old Michael Alfano, of Taunton, died Friday evening at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

According to investigators, Alfano had been crossing Washington Street on a bicycle Thursday at about 11:30 p.m. when a vehicle hit him. Alfano was left in the road while the Toyota Venza dragged his bicycle all the way to nearby Park Street.

Alfano was taken to Morton Hospital and later air-lifted by helicopter to Brigham and Women’s, where he died of his injuries.

Police officers found the vehicle abandoned there with the wreck of the bicycle nearby. The vehicle is registered to a Bridgewater resident, but as of Saturday afternoon, police have not yet made any arrests.

Alfano was in a crosswalk at the time he was struck, police said. The crash remains under investigation.
