PC Wins Season Opener, 80-58

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Junior forward Emmitt Holt had a career-high 22 points in his Providence debut, Rodney Bullock hit three 3-pointers and finished with 18 points and the Friars shot 62.5 percent in the second half to beat Vermont 80-58 on Monday night.
Holt, a junior college transfer who started his college career at Indiana, made 8 of 12 from the field and had three blocked shots. Kyron Cartwright added nine points and a career-high 12 assists for Providence (1-0).
A layup by Trae Bell-Haynes on the first possession of the game gave Vermont (1-1) a 2-0 lead but Bullock hit a 3-pointer 8 seconds later and Providence led the rest of the way.
A jumper by Cartwright made it 46-36 with 15 minutes remaining and the Friars led by double figures the rest of the way.
Payton Henson, a transfer from Tulane, led Vermont with a career-high 21 points. The Catamounts made 5 of 20 from 3-point range and were 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. Providence hit 17 of 20 foul shots.
