NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Six people were rescued from a fishing boat several miles off New Bedford Sunday.
According to the Coast Guard, the crew of the ‘Captain Jeff’ broadcast a distress call at about 9:30 a.m. to report that they were taking on water.
The Coast Guard sent a boat and helicopter to assist, along with several boats from local fire departments. The helicopter lowered a Coast Guardsman with pumping gear down to the sinking boat, but the equipment didn’t work and so he helped all six people aboard onto the local fire department vessels.
They were all taken ashore uninjured. A local salvage company is towing the still-floating boat into the harbor for dewatering.
