NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Two men were rushed to Rhode Island Hospital after a fire in their Douglas Avenue apartment in North Providence at about 1 a.m. Tuesday.

One of the men was able to walk out of the apartment on his own, despite injuries to his ribs, North Providence Battalion Fire Chief Dan Usenia said. The second man was unconscious, but still breathing, and firefighters had to carry him out of the burning apartment.

The Red Cross will put the two men up in a hotel for the near future, along with two other residents who live in the other apartment in the building.

It took about an hour for crews to get the flames under control.

Usenia said the building is not a total loss. He couldn’t say if the fire seemed suspicious in origin, but the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal is being called in to investigate it.
