Norton man dies in wrong-way crash on I-495

PLAINVILLE, Mass. (WPRI) — A Norton man died overnight in a wrong-way crash on I-495 that also left a woman with serious injuries.

According to Massachusetts State Police, the crash happened between southbound exits 13 and 14 at the Plainville-Foxboro line.

Police said they received reports of a wrong-way driver at about 2 a.m. By the time troopers arrived at the scene, the wrong-way driver had already crashed into an oncoming vehicle.

The wrong-way driver, identified by police as a young adult male from Norton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second driver, a 21-year-old Barnstable woman, was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries, according to police.

The right and middle lanes of the highway were shut down for a short time but both have since been reopened.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
