PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A man is in custody after leading Providence Police officers on a brief chase Saturday evening that resulted in a downtown traffic mess.

Police tell Eyewitness News the chase began following a call for shots fired on Providence’s Bridgham Street around 6:15 Saturday evening. Police said they pursued the suspect briefly, following him down Broad Street to the intersection of Broadway and Dave Gavitt Way near Exit 21 off I-95.

According to police, the chase came to an end when the suspect hit another car and fled on foot over I-95.

“When I walked back to the scene, I saw just like a million officers chasing him,” Ramon Espinosa told Eyewitness News moments after the crash. Espinosa said his car was rear-ended by the suspect’s.

Providence Police identified the suspect Sunday as 21-year-old Eugene Gibbs. Gibbs faces charges of reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, assault, resisting arrest, and possession of narcotics.

Meanwhile, a Providence fire truck sideswiped another car while en route to the scene of the crash.

“You know, after an accident, they’re rushing to the scene,” said Espinosa. “And in the mix of getting here, I believe they hit a Toyota Camry.”

Police tell Eyewitness News no one was seriously hurt.

“Just very, very lucky to still be alive and thankful for how the accident occurred because I know for a fact it could have been a lot worse,” said Espinosa.

This incident is still under investigation by police.
