NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A New Bedford man was listed in critical condition Tuesday after he was struck by a vehicle Monday night while attempting to cross the street.

Police said Benjamin D. Shurtleff, 57, was trying to cross County Street near the intersection of Madison Street when the vehicle struck him.

Rescue crews took him to St. Luke’s Hospital, and a medical helicopter later transported him to Rhode Island Hospital. Police said he was being treated at the trauma intensive care unit.

The driver of the vehicle stopped and cooperated with police, telling them he’d been driving north on County Street with his headlights on, and did not see Shurtleff until he struck him.

Police are still investigating precisely what happened.
