Swansea firefighters honored for saving man’s life

Swansea fire Locust Street

WORCESTER, Mass. (WPRI) — Three Swansea firefighters were honored Tuesday for saving a man from a burning home over the summer.

Capt. Michael J. Patterson, Lt. Brett M. Medeiros, and firefighter Patrick J. Burke received Medals of Valor from Gov. Charlie Baker and Public Safety Secretary Daniel Bennett at the 27th annual “Firefighter of the Year” Awards in Worcester.

On July 22, Patterson, Medeiros, and Burke went into a smoke-filled house on Locust Street, and found the man unconscious in the bedroom. The smoke was so thick, firefighters had to use thermal imaging to locate the victim.

Firefighters said the man wasn’t breathing when they carried him out of the house. Once outside, the firefighters performed CPR on the man and revived him.

Firefighters from 10 other Massachusetts communities were also honored at Tuesday’s ceremony.
