PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A Pawtucket man suffered serious injuries after crashing his car Wednesday morning.

Lt. Derek Borek of the Rhode Island State Police said state police received calls a few minutes before 11:30 a.m. about a Honda Civic driving erratically on Route 6 heading east into Providence.

Borek said the 20-year-old Pawtucket man who was driving was changing lanes while speeding when he apparently lost control of the car; it spun sideways into the back of a Waste Management garbage truck that was entering the highway from Dean Street, then rebounded back into the center barrier.

According to the Providence Fire Department, the driver was trapped in the vehicle and semi-responsive. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, Borek said.

A small group of onlookers gathered above the highway as State Police directed traffic around the wreck and the Providence Fire Department trucks.

Borek said the highway was closed for about two hours while crews removed the vehicle and the debris.
