Providence launches new holiday tradition

The city of Providence was getting ready to celebrate the holiday season on Friday, with a tree lighting ceremony at city hall followed by a weekend of festive fun!

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza planned to light the tree in front of Providence City Hall at 5 p.m. on Friday. An outdoor screening of “It’s a Wonderful Life” was also planned to take place on Grant’s Block, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The lighting was part of the first downtown “Sip & Shop”, happening between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday. Local retailers and small businesses planned special sales and events for the shopping along Westminster Street.

On Saturday, the city also planned to host a figure skating show produced by 2-time Olympian and Rhode Islander, Michelle Kwan.
