Alberto Rivera is wanted in connection with the shooting.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Providence police are investigating after an early morning shooting Sunday left one man in critical condition.

Providence police say 41-year-old Alberto Rivera is wanted in connection with the shooting. They said they believe the 34-year-old victim was targeted.

Police responded to the area of 126 Lowell Avenue around 3 a.m. Upon arriving at the scene, police located the male victim, who they said was unable to speak with police and suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital. As of Sunday night, the victim was still at the hospital after undergoing surgery and was still in critical condition.

The victim’s girlfriend told police she and the victim were sleeping when they heard a noise. She said her boyfriend went into the living room to check it out when she heard the sliding glass door shatter and a gunshot.

Police searched a silver vehicle driving outbound on Lowell Avenue shortly after the shooting, but that driver and his vehicle were released.
