Former Providence fire chief remembers Pearl Harbor

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – His trip to Hawaii started early Sunday morning and it’s a trip he says he’s fortunate to be apart of.

Beginning in 2005, former Providence Fire Chief George Farrell as well as other fire chiefs in Rhode Island would bring local World War II veterans to Washington D.C. to reflect about those who served.

This year the former chief was invited to reflect at the Pearl Harbor ceremonies in Hawaii. He also was able to speak with those who served that fateful morning 75 years ago.

“They begin to open up and tell stories about what their life was like before the war, during the war, and after the war,” said Farrell.

Farrell considers himself lucky to be apart of this journey.

“It’s certainly an honor,” Farrell said. “[It’s a] privilege to be here and represent Rhode Island.”

Farrell says it’s important we honor the history of those who served, especially when you’re talking about Pearl Harbor.
