‘Shop with a Cop’ in Cranston Saturday

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — Police officers in Cranston are taking local children from low-income families shopping for the holidays.

The department says the “Shop with a Cop” program is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.

Members of the department, including Chief of Police Michael Winquist, plan to take the children shopping at Wal-mart to brighten their holidays.

Each child is paired with a uniformed officer and given money to spend on gifts for their relatives and themselves.

Capt. Vincent McAteer, who organizes community outreach, says it’s a fantastic way to make a lasting connection in the lives of some really great kids.

He says he hopes the children will enjoy the event as much as the officers do.

The Cranston YMCA and Cadence Manufacturing are sponsoring the event.
