Police ID Providence men killed in Fall River highway crash

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) – Massachusetts State Police Monday released the names of the two men killed in a single-vehicle crash on Route 24 in Fall River Sunday morning.

Trooper said Joseph Burnham, 36, and Laurence Wheeler, 23, were traveling in a 2003 Mercury headed north on Route 24, south of Exit 8A, about 1:30 a.m. when for some reason the vehicle veered off the right side of the road and hit a tree.

Police said Burnham was driving and Wheeler was the passenger in the vehicle. Both men were taken to Charlton Hospital in Fall River, where they were pronounced dead.

Another passenger, a 23-year-old man whose hometown police did not release, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. There’s no word on that person’s condition.

The crash is still under investigation by the State Police.
