Wreaths paying tribute to a nation of veterans

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — As they have in years past, Rhode Island lawmakers and members of the military are laying wreaths on the graves of U.S. veterans to honor their sacrifice to our country.

At the State House, a ceremony was held Monday afternoon as part of the annual “Wreaths Across America” tribute. A wreath was then laid at the Garden of Heroes on the southwest lawn.

Ceremonies at the state house kick off a week’s worth of events to raise awareness and appreciation for veterans’ and families’ sacrifices.

In addition to several representatives of the Rhode Island National Guard and other branches of the military, Rhode Island Adjutant General Brig. Gen. Christopher P. Callahan and Lt. Gov. Daniel McKee led the proceedings.

In 2015, nearly a million wreaths were laid at gravesites by Wreaths Across America participants.
