New Bedford man charged with motor vehicle homicide with driving drunk

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A New Bedford man was charged with motor vehicle homicide on Thursday morning after a crash late Wednesday.

Police said that Jose Vaz, 43, was driving under the influence and operating to endanger when his car collided with a vehicle driven by John Leo Avery at about 10:48 p.m.

The crash occurred at Plympton Street and Tarkiln Hill Road, according to officials.

Avery was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital early Thursday morning.

New Bedford and State Police are continuing to investigate.
