Police investigate pedestrian fatally struck in Warwick

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Warwick police are investigating a pedestrian that was struck crossing Jefferson Boulevard Thursday night around 7 p.m.

Captain Rick Rathbun of the Warwick PD confirmed that the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officials believe the victim had left work and was crossing the street to get to his car when he was struck by a minivan. Police said he was not in a crosswalk.

“We have no indication of alcohol or drug on scene. In terms of additional factors, speed, etc. That will be determined as the investigation continues,” said Rathbun.

According to police, the victim may have been struck more than once after he was on the ground.

Rathbun said, “it looks like they may not have known the victim was in the roadway, so we don’t believe it was an intentional act on their part, so they’re not in trouble. We are just looking for assistance from the public from witnesses or involved persons to call us.”

Police also that said the area was not well lit, and with the cold, it is possible that the victim was wearing something that would obscure his vision/hearing.
