NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) – Police are investigating a late-night shooting on Tallman Street.

New Bedford police confirmed a man was shot in the head at about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday.

When police arrived on scene, the victim – since identified as Justin Ortiz, 21, of New Bedford – was still breathing and he was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford.

He was later transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence where, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, he was in “extremely critical condition”

Police could not confirm if a weapon was found at the scene of the shooting or if any suspects are in custody, but they have been interviewing witnesses.

“Two shootings in two or three months. Now there’s another shooting,” said Jorge Medeiros, who lives nearby.

Medeiros wasn’t talking about the neighborhood, but about a single address: 51 Tallman St.

The words, “drug dealers moved” could be seen scrawled across the building’s front door on Wednesday.

“One time I counted,” Medeiros recalled. “One hour, 41 people went in to pick up drugs.”

“This is the big problem on this street,” he added. “Two years old, three years old, I have daughters. I’m scared.”

A 25-year-old survived being shot several times at the address just three months ago.

Ortiz was in the Marines, according to Medeiros.

The shooting remains under investigation.
