Fall River man charged with girlfriend’s murder

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) – Police have arrested a Fall River man in connection with a deadly stabbing Monday night.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Scott Rego, 26, was charged Tuesday with the murder of his girlfriend Kristina Reis, 36.

The DA’s office said police responded to 17 Linden St. around 9:15 p.m. Monday and found Reis on the front porch of the home, bleeding from an apparent stab wound. Prosecutors said Reis was rushed to Charlton Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators said they found Rego inside the apartment he shared with the victim. He was suffering from a wound to the chest which, they said, he sustained during the commission of the homicide.

Rego was taken to Saint Anne’s Hospital, then later transferred to Rhode Island Hospital. There was no immediate word on his condition.

Neighbors said Rego and Reis had only been living in the apartment for about a month, but they’ve heard the couple fighting before.

“Last week I was watching TV in my living room and I heard a commotion,” recalled neighbor Donato Dacosta. “I saw him telling her, ‘give me my freaking key, give me my key, give me my key.’ She did not give him the key.”

“He was parked right here and she was in the back seat, he was in the front,” he added. “I look and he’s choking her.”

Dacosta said the fights would always end with one of them walking away, but he never thought one would end like this.

“I never expect this,” said Dacosta. “Even last night, I thought it was somebody else in the next house, and then you see the blood.”

The DA’s Office said once Rego is released from the hospital, he will first be arraigned in Rhode Island as a fugitive from justice and then return to Fall River, where he’ll be arraigned on the murder charge.
