Driver charged after Central Falls crash seriously injures passenger

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) — A Central Falls man was arrested overnight after police said he crashed his car in the city and ran off, leaving behind a passenger with serious injuries.

Jose Perez Garcia, 21, was arraigned Monday on charges related to the crash, which took place just before midnight Sunday on Broad Street. Police said the car knocked down several utility poles and came to a stop against a home, leaving the vehicle heavily damaged.

When first responders arrived on scene, they found a 41-year-old man trapped in the backseat, according to police. The man, later identified as Ismael Salinas, was freed from the car and transported to the Rhode Island Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses indicated to police that the driver and another passenger fled the scene after the crash. Their investigation led them to a home on Rand Street, where they found Garcia with bruises and lacerations on his face. Police said he agreed to come into the station for questioning, after which he was placed under arrest.

Garcia was arraigned Monday on charges of driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury, duty to stop in an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, and reckless driving. He also received summonses for failing to stop after colliding with an unattended vehicle and damaging a highway fixture.

He was held on $10,000 surety bail.
