Police: 1 man killed in Providence shooting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating a shooting on Unit Street in Providence that left one man dead.

Authorities said multiple shell casings were found on the street after a male victim was believed to be shot inside a second-floor apartment around 8 p.m.

Lt. Richard Fernandes of the Providence Police Department said the victim’s friends drove him to Roger Williams Hospital after the shooting and he was in critical condition.

“You know, when we got the call and learned that he was at the hospital, officers went over to the hospital and spoke to the doctors there and given the news, detectives responded and now we’re finishing our investigation,” Major David Lapatin said.

No arrests have been made yet, but police believe the victim was targeted. This is the first homicide of the year in Providence.
