Golf tournament formerly at Trump resort unveils Mexico home

NAUCALPAN, Mexico (AP) — A golf tournament yanked from a Florida resort owned by Donald Trump unveiled its new home in Mexico on Wednesday.

Sponsor Grupo Salinas said the event will be held in March at the Chapultepec Golf Club outside Mexico City.

The PGA Tour revealed in June that the World Golf Championship event was moving to Mexico after being at Trump National Doral in Miami since 2007. The announcement came nearly a year after the now Republican presidential nominee accused Mexican migrants of bringing drugs to the U.S. and being rapists.

The only mention of Trump at Wednesday’s announcement came when Bernardo Villacecias of Grupo Salinas said that fortunately Trump’s comments made it possible for them to bring the tournament to Mexico.

In June, PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said the move was being made because a sponsor could not be found to keep the event in Miami. He conceded that Trump’s ownership might have complicated the sponsor search.
