PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Nearly 13 years after her son was gunned down in the city’s Mount Hope neighborhood, Elizabeth Hector is still waiting for answers.
No arrest has been made in the drive-by shooting that killed 17-year-old Joseph Hector late on the warm, foggy night of Sept. 23, 2001 in what his mother believes was a case of mistaken identity. Witnesses said they saw a gold Jeep dart down Camp Street following the shooting, but no one ever came forward to identify the suspect.
Elizabeth isn’t alone.
A six-month WPRI.com review of homicides across Southern New England shows that of the 256 murders in Rhode Island’s capital city between 2000 and 2013, 111 cases have gone unsolved, a rate that far exceeds most of the region’s similar-sized cities.
